Cheap ride to nowhere

posted in economy |

The weather today was about as unpleasant as it gets. High winds. Heavy cold rain. A whole list of things to do outside that just didn’t get done. Did I add that the snow fell as well, which left the dog in a curious state. Her environment had to be revisited, in spite of the climate. Door open. Door close. Repeat.

Son #1 opted for the friendly family taxi to go off visiting friends. No big deal, as I had to pick up some groceries along the way. He wasn’t on the list for supper, although he arrived back with a very Cosmo Kramer entry shortly thereafter. The decision to go back out to visit friends, just before clock changing time, did not convince anyone else to do the taxi-dance, so he grabbed his coat and wallet and called a real taxi. Not much cash. No matter, the city has ATMs everywhere.

He arrived back about twenty minutes later, managing to wake all light sleepers, especially the dog. Turned out that the ATM network goes down for maintenance about this time of the week, which meant that the $5 he had along was enough to pay the taxi fare down to the nearest ATM and back. No further. Out and back, with nothing else accomplished other than to get wet and empty the wallet. Just another lesson in life. I’m still surprised that the banking industry needs downtime. After all, they make enough money to permit redundancy on something other than service charges, one would hope.
