Ways to mitigate the heat

posted in food |

Now children, what do we do when the temperature reaches 30C? Why, that’s right… as little as possible. Or we can go for ice cream.

We did both. The house has been a slow moving zone for the last two days, as the weather station recorded a new highest ever reading. Sleep became tentative, and as for any urge to spend time in a hot kitchen; use your judgment. I did bake a flat of chicken legs (feet free) because it was scheduled, but the eating part went into the optional column. More room for ice cream.

Funny how much tougher you have to be to live in Canada. Down south, they can get temperatures that reach 35C. They never have to read a thermometer that has stopped in its track at around -35C, however. Yes, we handle our seventy degrees of range like true northern spirits. In winter, we find it too cold to move, and in summer we find it too hot to move.

But back to the ice cream. I had left some subliminal advertising around the place; ads praising the blizzard, for example. But, we decided to go for something less corporate. Down at the bottom of the hill, right beside the butcher, there’s a dairy bar, with picnic tables and photos of the product line. I went for the “trois coulis”, which is a close cousin to a banana split (no fruit were peeled in the making of this product). Too much product, incidentally, so I called for reinforcements to get through before the end of summer.
