Far from the madness of roads under repair

posted in ham radio |

Oh the joys of automatic upgrades. Tonight, WordPress jumped a whole version number, and the effort required by me: agree. How simple is that? All in all, this has been a good day. The postal people came through, and when I got home from my usual daytripping, there was a cardboard box on my favourite chair.

This week is “tear up the road in front of the office” time. As the traffic is delayed by big machines cutting trenches in the asphalt, I take delight in watching the lunatics in the driver seats. One woman (old enough to know better) was convinced she could make things move better/faster by blowing her horn. Over and over and over. Another driver, sure that the delay was meant for everybody else, pulled out into the other lane, drove forward until progress was impossible and then had to retreat. A study in madness.

But back to my box. I’m not one to put off the inevitable. By the time others were sitting down to supper, I was up to my elbows in capacitors, resistors, ICs, etc. Oh the joy! I will provide pictures, later; it takes time to set up the virtual darkroom, mix the virtual chemicals, stir virtually. The way of the future may be digital, but my analog past is right there in sync.

For those who wonder, time and age do not “cure” colourblindness. Determining the value of the lowly resistor still requires a VOM. The bands are not obvious. Ditto for tiny diodes, where the microprint is just a bump in the kitbuilder’s highway. Was that 1N48, or…?
