Silence does have its own sound

posted in technology |

By one simple action, the noise went away.

Oddly enough, I was standing in the middle of our local Future Shop, where the ambient sound can approach the level of a small industrial shop. Surround sound, all the time. Ventilation fans, telephones, the kid in the car stereo section; all active simultaneously. And then, I placed the headphones on my head, and I heard music. Nothing else. Not loud, at the threshold of pain. Rather, at the level I’d use if I was sitting quietly, reading and feeding.

But I removed the headphones, and “it all came rushing back to me”.

This evening, I had a chance to try the new Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones. Not in the comfort of my own home, but under terrible conditions, and I’m  now a believer. My own Bose headphones are now second choice. Runners-up. With new headphones, I could hide from the simulation of war. The dog could herald the arrival of the milkman or the paperman or the taxman and I would remain oblivious. Maybe there is an answer to ambient noise.

Down in Moncton, the woman who went missing some weeks ago has been found. Oddly, we now know the name of her alleged kidnapper, but she has moved into that grey area of “identity withheld from publication by the order of the court”. Strange situation. After all, this has been a very public search for a missing person, and her name has appeared, over and over again, in newspapers across the country. Now, she’s anonymous.

Does the judge believe that people in Moncton won’t be able to tie the two laces into a fancy bow?
