Shadows tell the tale

posted in humour |

For a brief moment, I could see my shadow, twice. Caught between the waning moon on one side and the newly visible sun on the other, I was cross-lit and cold enough to wish I had a personal burrow. Here we are, again; Groundhog Day and still no declaration of national holiday status. A lifetime of campaigning without success.

The skies are clear over the known world.

Wx on Groundhog Day

Ignore that veil of haze; it will part. At central observation points, the boys will be prodded until they lumber out and stare sleepily over the assembled multitudes.

Predictions by year

Date  ↓ Prediction  ↓ Groundhog  ↓ Location  ↓
2010 6 more weeks of winter Wiarton Willie Wiarton, Ontario
2010 6 more weeks of winter Punxsutawney Phil Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania
2010 6 more weeks of winter Spanish Joe Spanish, Ontario
2010 6 more weeks of winter Dunkirk Dave Dunkirk, New York
2010 Early Spring Buckeye Chuck Marion, Ohio
2010 6 more weeks of winter Shubenacadie Sam Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia
2010 6 more weeks of winter Fred la Marmotte Val d’Espoir, Quebec

Is that clear enough for the rest of the world? We’re in for another few weeks of  wishing we were elsewhere. The billboard proclaiming “Viva! Cuba!” down by the river speaks to me in a way that the advertising community can usually only dream about.

Although my “party hardy days” are in hibernation, I wish (in retrospect) that I had at least visited the University of Dallas, where the groundhog gets true respect. Last weekend’s pub theme recognized the importance of Marmota monax, even though winter is just a concept to the student body. (No muttering about other concepts, such as studying). I wonder if they sell any appropriately themed sweatshirts?

My guerilla side is showing.  The office photocopier has a prominent, bilingual message for the gang here:

Happy Groundhog Day / Bonne Journée de la Marmotte
