Good, better, best, etc.

posted in education |

While you’re up, could you check the thermostat? I worry that we’re overheating the back yard and beyond. Unseasonable weather and all that; already the middle-past of the month and we haven’t had a serious blast from winter. My parka is still “parked”.

The first poem that I learned by reading my teacher’s agenda (upsidedown) was a simple thing: Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until the good is better and the better is best.

Inspirational, even after all these years. Methinks the Ministry of Education must have run across it, recently. We’ve had a legislative change, and from now on, the partners in the big agreement must produce, or else.

Oh yes… the partners. That would be the government, and the school boards and the schools. All the usual faces. School boards are scrambling to produce a pluri-annual plan of action, explaining how the percentage of graduates will rise by a predetermined rate.

Think of betting in the casino, at an educational roulette wheel, if that helps. There will be a formal contract prepared, and IF (because schools are not supposed to predispose failure) the rate of success doesn’t match projections, then the full power of contract law will apply. Remedial values applied.

I’ve got this weird mental image of the school board serving an afterschool detention, after a strongly worded reprimand from the Minister, because too many students (the real clients) got less than the goal of 60%.

Before that contract is drawn (and quartered), a select group will have applied the best parts of Jesuitical theory, and the strategic pan will be a work of educational art.
