Small details for an ordinary day
Systems run more slowly in the new calendar year. Feels like the headline for my life; I missed the bus by thirty seconds this morning. Just late enough to read the number as the big blue limousine pulled out of view, with nary a wink or a nod. The ideal start to 2010, work world version.
I have alternate routes that I can use, and I did. Missed the next bus by thirty seconds. Do you sense a pattern emerging here? Oh well, the extra fifteen minutes of brisk walk to allow my arrival in the cubicle with fifteen minutes of tardiness were worth it, from the cardio point of view. Maybe this is a sign that I need to include more physical activity in my routine (or maybe it’s time to do a preemptive clock reset, adding in a few minutes of catchup).
In a world where we must count our small victories, I received a rack for my telephone this morning. You see, we have desk sets that reveal tidbits of information: the “almost correct time”, the fact that there are waiting messages, a complete absence of anything indicating that I’ve (again) managed to unplug things with my size 10 feet. Unfortunately, my viewing angle has always precluded noticing that important window on the world around me, unless I stood up and did the “Snoopy as a vulture” posture.
Someone took pity on me, and when a rack became surplus, I inherited said contraption. Now I can remain comfortably sprawled in my chair (and no, I didn’t get the Herman Miller Aeron I’d requested for Christmas). No big cost to the corporation, a huge boost in my productivity.
