Five renewals and counting

posted in environment |

Checking my statements, I realize that this site is heading into a fifth year. That’s as long as I spent (give or take a bit) in university, or high school. I’m sure that none of my teachers were whispering around the staff room about the risks of my becoming a serial poster. Surprises for all involved.

The weather is cold enough to make summer seem very far away. The astronomical dates for seasons have nothing to do with the real schedule of things; winter has changed my daily routine for weeks now. I’m ready to switch to a larger coat, wrap my head in a scarf and moan. We’ve had nothing to compare with places like Calgary (-54C… never been there).

In passing, the car still starts, although others have not been so lucky. This is far from scientific analysis, but ever since we stopped “plugging in” the block heater, several cars ago, the cold has ceased to be an impediment.

The dog no longer wants to hang around outside, waiting for idle passersby. First of all, there are none; not even that stupid cat that likes to tease. Her whiteness has adopted a new efficient mode, and if we leave the door area she barks (single, emphatic barks) to keep our attention focused on the job at hand. Out, in. Too bad we can’t train her for next year.

Only one more day until the Christmas break. I am eager! The lack of ringing telephones, interruptions from over the top of my cubicle wall and an umbilical tie to an email client will be profoundly appreciated.
