Celebrating a community
We spent some time over at North Lake Harbour today, long enough to see a tuna landed and dressed within several minutes. Quite a change from several decades ago, when a fish was a trophy to be hung on display, photographed, written up in the newspapers. This fish was already in the icehouse by the time we walked around the fish factory, and the chainsaw was fired up to remove the head before the dog even realized what kind of a show was in store. I guess that familiarity breeds contempt.
Took a tour of the Basin Head Museum; something I’ve done many times before but not recently. The displays have been renewed and improved, so I’m glad we made the detour. Also picked up a hint about a property for sale that might be of interest. We made our first swing by, but I’m a shopper that takes his time. We had supper back at North Lake where I had a chance to mull over what we really want to do when we “retire” from paid work down the road.
This evening was the start of the bicentennial for St. Columba Parish. We went to mass, concelebrated by Fr. JJ Dunphy, Fr. Art Seaman and the new pastor, Fr. MacDonald. Some really good stories of the earlier years in the pastoral lives. These are men that have spent close to half a century in service, and there were many other priests that couldn’t make it up this evening. There was a short reception in the church basement with a lot of old pictures and artifacts to check out in the shoulder deep crowd. Chance to see how the generation of my parents is doing well, but the numbers still around from “my generation” are small, very small.
The requisite campfire was lit upon return to the tenting ground.
