Great actors can save a minor movie
Welcome to another “found it by flipping” movie review. While others stand in line to see the latest spendfests from Hollywood, I get my entertainment from late night TV, where the choices are always dated but the popcorn is cheap.
I wasn’t even planning to watch anything the evening, but up on APTN, the start of a movie caught my attention, and I’m glad I stayed the urge to surf onwards. Put Brando, De Niro, Norton and Paul Soles in the same place at the same time, stir with some tech toys and enjoy. Although “The Score” was made close to a decade ago, the story is timeless. People with a penchant for other people’s stuff, breaking into a safe to harvest their own lottery replacement.
The film was shot in Montreal, with no effort to disguise the regional content. Authentic, right down to the on air news reader. I can’t claim to “know” all the corners in the downtown area, but I never felt lost as the story wove a path both above and below ground level. Great urban exploration footage. The secure vault was just as interesting a visit as anything done by Cruise in MI, and the stress levels were just as high.
The plot twists and turns without resorting to clichés, and I especially liked the science (that has been retested on Mythbusters). Although Brando plays a supporting role, he has that certain larger than life (no pun intended) personality that has made him a box office legend. De Niro and Norton play well together. This movie is one to rewatch, if only because I want to see a bit more Linux terminal footage.
