Really popular books and a trip into space
What makes a popular fiction book jump to that uber-category of super popular? Over the years, the family has read most of the stuff that gets front shelf status in the bookstores; the Potters are poster children here. This year, though, there’s gender bias.
The Twilight series is everywhere. On the bus, in the library, lying around on beach towels. My spouse read the four, but the boys (like me) just didn’t get it. No interest. Even this evening, while the movie plays in the living room, there’s an audience of one. Gender bias. It seems that guys just don’t feel the stirring in the soul.
No matter; there are lots of other books to keep one busy, but I wonder (not enough to go and read, though) what it is that Bella and Edward have to keep such a hold on the female imagination?
I see where Circus Guy (pronounced like Gee) is going to celebrate his 50th in outer space. The one thing a billionaire can do is have really cool birthday parties. Forget the pony or the clown. Be an astronaut for a few days. As for the cost (35 million $ US), the man can afford the tab. Think of it as a step up from a group meal at Micky D’s place.
But wait, there’s more. He will be hosting a show for the rest of us (those smitten with the circus), and from now on kids will have a new career goal… Daddy, when I grow up, I want to be a really rich astronaut!
