High winds in other places, please
There, but for the wisdom of the Weather Channel go I. After the recent night of high wind and rain (this summer), I started to feel pretty smug about how resistant to the elements I’d become. Slept the night away, etc. Well, summer might be over, but the interesting parts of weather may not be.
Last evening, parts of southern Ontario tasted the whip of local tornados, which do a good job of ruining an otherwise perfect day. I like my roof, just the way it is. That tree in the front yard is fine business, thank you. A windshield isn’t improved by a stake through the corner. From now on, when the TV screen mentions risks of severe thunderstorms, I’m going to pay attention. The Tornado Belt seems to bave moved up from the navel area of the continent.
Back East, the watch is on for “Bill” (the hurricane). Now, storms are frisky critters, and the projected path may vary by hundreds, nay thousands, of kilometres before next week begins. Just the same, winds in excess of 100 km/h can mess your hair. Just for fun, stick your arm out the window the next time you’re zooming down the highway. Now, imagine the buffet if you could double your speed without attracting a radar car. Get the picture? High winds and rain might be common in the tropics with their oh, so flexible palm trees. Up here, we grow spruce for ground cover. A good wind can lift one of those sideways…
I’ll be watching the news to see what Sunday brings, and living vicariously isn’t always amusing.
