All along the Fundy coastline
The bright sun invited us to go down on the strand and see what the locals consider to be “the view”. Remember that Yarmouth is still a working port, with a long history of shipbuilding, rum running and other profitable practices. What we did notice was an example of poor pilotage.
The road along the Fundy shore winds through another of the Acadian regions, complete with a small university and some great scenery. We decided to put an accent on the morning, thanks to the local radio station CIFA.
Getting scallops in Digby was as simple as taking a seat on the outdoor deck in the downtown area and waiting a few minutes. Happily, the pile driver operator over on the wharf took his break at the same time. Silent synchronicity.
No more than out of Acadie and you’re in to the land of apples and beautiful houses, in the area close to Wolfville. Another university town, but this time with panache. Acadia, a whole world apart from l’Acadie, with its own national park (and memorial) in Grand-Pré.
Even the gift shop cries out for the rest of us to remember that ethnic cleansing has a long history, profitable for the oppressor. I declined buying a parchment copy of the original proclamation posted in the local church by Winslow, back in 1755. Although this site is a Parks Canada recreation, some of the trees out in the park were already rooted and in leaf on the day of the convocation.
We’ve seen a lot of twisty two-lane blacktop over the last few days. While trying to follow one of the “named tourist routes”, I’m sure that we saw our own tail… On both the Evangeline and the Glooscap Trails, the sea is never far, even though tidal patterns may leave you with nothing but mud, as far as the eye can see.
We decided to call the day early, and are currently cooping in Truro (a sort of camping that requires a motel room instead of a nylon roof) until our homeward leg. Supper at a small restaurant, the Wooden Hog, was quiet, and we took a long walk among the beautiful older three-storey homes near the motel.
