Come ride the trains

posted in travel |

Today required some things that were out of the ordinary, since the sun had finally appeared. Unable to choose, we built a house and went for a ride on a passenger train.

The house won’t last through a winter, given the lack of a firm foundation and the meshy mushy walls. Someone in our group decided that rain could ruin a banquet, so we dug deeply into our stock of extra baggage and pulled out a sack filled with poles, ropes, nylon and screens. By ignoring the sheets of instructions meant for someone else, we managed to assemble one of the new breed of temporary structures. A cooking shelter. A ceiling where the bugs from all around could accumulate and bang harmlessly. No sense trying to screen out an exploring swarm. See.

This afternoon, after exploring the neighbourhood down the hill from our place (three houses, one family; go figure) we followed back roads to find the elusive strawberry and ice cream social that we miss, year after year. A crowd was on hand, and a fine time was had by all present. We decided that a rail journey would be just the thing, and with tickets in hand we joined the waiting passengers on the platform. Extended family, all. Cousins and more cousins, if you will.

The restaurant at North Lake is open again, under new ownership. A fine table, friends on hand, as well as more extended family. Did I mention, cousins all? My plate of appetizers was all that, and my supper of pepper steak over pasta will be one of those things that I’ll add to the home menu, (once we’re home).
