Did you hear what I heard?
My local vendor for magazines and bus books has the enlightened habit of playing music in the shop; he also sells used CDs, so it makes sense to let the client sample the wares. Today, the artist of choice was one that has figured in the “soundtrack of my life”. Without trying to date myself, we were listening to one of the early albums by the Moody Blues.
Back at UPEI, I had a limited collection of recorded music, and the Moodies were often left on through the long hours of the night, when regular radio had faded to noise. In fact, a search for new sources of music found me in the “on air” chair at Radio UPEI/CSUR/CIMN (700 KHz) during the years when I was paying to learn many, many things. Not a bad choice, in retrospect.
Tonight, the baton passed to a new generation. Son #2 is currently “on air”, albeit to a larger potential audience. He is part of a small group of friends that have decided to challenge the more commercial sounds in the city, by presenting a weekly program devoted to hip hop via CKIA-FM (88.3 MHz). From father to son, so to speak. We darkened the TV and cranked up the FM radio for a change of pace. Well, not actually cranked, but that was an option…
Radio is the perfect medium to address an unknown audience (you can’t see me, I can’t see you too). For the shy, or stage struck, you have the chance to overcome your fears, and with a bit of luck, you’ll never embarrass yourself so badly that it makes a difference in your day-t0-day. With his first thirty minutes already done, he can hold his head high (even if we can’t see him). And, in this new multimedia world, here’s the link to the requisite blog.
