Life on an island is good
There’s something about island life. I’ve lived, not just on The Island, but on several islands; all by choice. That security belt of open water does something to the psyche. Tonight, we paid a virtual visit to an island just down river from here. Maybe, when the summer gets rolling, we’ll pile in the car and go, because I liked what I saw.
La Petite Seduction (another of those catchy Radio-Canada titles) took us to Ile aux Coudres, in the company of Karine Vanasse and Dany Turcotte. Fun people to travel with, in passing. The island is a short ferry ride away from St-Joseph-de-la-Rive, and the fee for “a boy and his car” is within any budget – free. Ditto for a bicycle, which is probably a better choice for a day trip.
Within the script of the program, we heard local song and dance, had an unseasonal visit with the masked “Mi-Careme” group, toured a flour mill and learned about bees (no birds). There were several local legends to give us a taste of the island mindset, and a particular game involving an oar and a wood chip that is particular to the community.
At one point, the program took a step to the left, and we were suddenly celebrating Greek culture. Kiki, how did you end up there? The part about breaking plates was lost in translation, because at home we try to wash the dishes, rather than simply reducing them to remnants. All to say that the short time we spent (vicariously) over on Ile-aux-Coudres was the best segment this season for the series.
