The artist has a fame that lasts for a long, long time
The Generation Gap. No lack of press coverage on this one for the last, like, forever. Anyone that has had a parent/child moment has experienced it, and that means that it qualifies as a cultural foundation. The last two evenings, TV has brought an example into our living room, and although this is only one small moment, it serves as a great example.
Right now, a famous recording artist has been in the city, promoting a show that will be presented in a few weeks. I recognize the name, I recognize the face. So do my children, but for a very different reason. Seems that all my sons, at one time or another, have been “Rick Rolled”… Blame it on an addiction to YouTube that is generalized around here. You haven’t been? Sorry, but I’m not going to facilitate things. You can do your own research.
The artist, as a young man, had a string of “hits”; enough that he hasn’t had to work for the last couple of decades. Still, fame is hard to set aside, and so he’s over here on a quick tour. He’ll be appearing with other famous artists: Debbie Gibson and Samantha Fox to name a pair. At one time, Ms Fox had posters hanging in bedrooms across the nation, but now her moment has passed, and my three sons have no idea who she might be. On the other hand, they have been “Rick Rolled”…
The artist appeared on French TV last evening, and I enjoyed the show. He made the best of an awkward moment, because culture doesn’t always translate well. Neither does the concept of being “Rick Rolled”…
