Thank you for the music

posted in music |

At around midnight, in the various time zones worldwide, a new record album was released. CD, streaming, whatever your mode. By breakfast, the various songs were already charting at #1 (is the Top Forth still a “thing”?) And as the fan base came wake, my children weren’t even invited to the hysteria. You see, after forty years, ABBA is back!

Forty years; that’s a very long time in the musical world. In fact, I can’t think of any other band that took that much time for deep reflection in the recording studio. I’ve already given a listen (thank you, YouTube). Not sure where I’d find a record store, any more. And my reaction is tempered. OK, got a good beat, you can dance to it. Worked for an earlier generation. When the band first showed their steps, mini skirts and go-go boots were still in vogue, at least in certain areas.

I have to wonder. Will this be the dawn of a new retro age? Will we have to learn the lyrics before hitting the clubs? Are there still clubs? A lifetime has gone by, and I can’t wait to see who reacts. The band, itself, have moved into grandparent status. A piano is still a piano, but there are limits.

Brand recognition will assure that this one will bring in the “Money, money, money”, but is “Fernando” where the world stopped, while playing musical chairs? A lot to process, here. And I really want a “behind the scenes, studio documentary. For the memories. A special nod to Wikipedia for the historical information. Forty years!
