Pre-electoral promises

posted in economy |

I think that the job description for federal politicians can be reduced to one phrase: Lurch from one mud hole to another. Today, the feds decided to promise billions of dollars to pay for a large hydroelectric project. One that is well underway… and that wouldn’t even have been built if the feds had handled an earlier involvement properly. Yes, I know we need the “juice”. But, at what cost? The produced power is parallel to another mega-project, and in both cases we’re feeding the hungry market to the south. So, why the taxpayer dollars? I really don’t know.

A package arrived early; my latest Morse key is here, and has joined others of it’s species on a shelf downstairs. I had emailed the dealer (in Germany) several days ago, and received a curt answer that the key was on its way. Expected next week. And now here it is. Shows that the tracking of parcels is every bit as “hit and miss” as it was when Morse was important.

We (not me, exactly; my provincial neighbours) got one of those feel-good political announcements today. Cheap daycare, coming soon. OK, three years, but the intention is important. I hope that any election planning, this fall, will respect the tiny promises to tiny provinces.

Over at the bridge, where a couple of cyclists were left stranded on our side after the shuttle was shuttered, a peace offering. The couple will receive a bridge pass. Let’s note that this will not cover travel under your own locomotive power. They’ll need a car to “profit”.  Useless, but fun to watch.
