Update, upgrade or replace
Having a mission to complete gives purpose to my life. Right now, I’m tasked with upgrading the maps in the onboard navigation system of the RV.
I’m calling up on my years of reading (and deciphering) poor quality documentation to see me through. After verifying the model ID of the system, I asked Google to show me the path to success. It involves finding out what version of software is already involved. Then, download a “blob” of about 500 MB, which I will install on a USB drive.
Next up, figure out where to plug the USB drive into things. I have a suspicion, but the glare from a setting sun has me putting any tests on hold. Besides, the download won’t be done for hours. The appropriate page in the radio docs show that you just press buttons until something happens; we’ve all been there, right? Apparently, the actual update (if it doesn’t fail) will take about fifteen minutes. We shall see…
And I have to keep in mind that this is just a preparatory step. Purchasing and installing a new map set will be uncharted/unexplored territory. I’m confident that Kenwood and Garmin have already tested their recipe. I mean, it’s been “out there” for more than five years.
So, why? Well, the other plan would be to purchase a whole new system, and figure out how to physically wire things up. I looked at the price, briefly; that’s why I’m back to trying an upgrade on what we already have. Spending more than I should will serve as a backup plan.
