Ready to call the job done

posted in environment |

Heading into the weekend, with back-to-back heavy weather warnings. But, I don’t care. Here in the house, we’re about to mark an end to a long winter (and summer) of renovations. In fact, after I put the doorknobs back in place, I’m supposed to start shifting material/furniture from one space to another, to allow some photography. The better to record just how far we’ve come.

Now, this didn’t start from scratch. We did have a floor in place, and some standing walls. But, inject some money, some time, some competent techniques, and the basement has gone from a “imagine what we could do” to “look at what we have done”. A sense of wonderment.

The staircase is reinforced, enclosed and painted. The ceiling are suspended, with lights. We have closets, where once there was nothing. There’s a genuine washroom with shower. The electrical hardware is “out of sight and out of mind”. Our chiller pipes are behind a wall. And we have all of this, before any visitors come back this way. In fact, I was asked to designate surplus furniture, for transport to a local thrift store, because we now have a true surplus.

I would not want to start again; construction sounds are far from musical. The dust from dry walling is worse than I predicted. Losing the handrail in the stairs (for several months) proved the value of having one.

There will be details to decide, but the house is now complete. If we ever get back to a state of normal, the kids can come and hang out, for as long as they want.
