But did you bank up the house?

posted in environment |

Oddly, here in the frozen north, we never think about things like “what if the house freezes and water comes out of the ceiling”? After watching news clips from Texas, maybe we should. After all, it gets cold here for months at a time. Why don’t we get ceiling icicles?

Oh, right. We build our houses based on experience, and cold comes and goes, over and over again. Down in the land where cattle roam and men wear spurs and six-guns, they don’t have to prepare for things that recall scenes from The Day After Tomorrow. Perhaps they should.

Yesterday, my news feed carried snow pics from Athens, and some very uncomfortable camels in Saudi Arabia. The world may be warming, but that means discomfort going forward. I’m glad that my house is constructed with more than one season in mind. And if I lived in a land where cacti are part of the local countryside, I’d be rethinking things. Nothing against thorns, mind you.

Actually, I’m paying more attention to the pesky details of cold weather. My social media includes chatter from folks that want warmth, at a reasonable price. The term “heat pump” (unknown to me as a child) seems to have garnered a lot of attention. Guess that getting in the wood for winter has been preempted. And insulating (everything) is a really good idea. I’m old enough to remember “banking up the house” which had nothing to do with a mortgage and everything to do with finding ample supplies of seaweed down on the beach. Not me, but my father, and grandfather, and… you get the idea.
