A timeline of movies
There are many ways to mark the passage of time. I don’t go for notches on my belt (structural defect) or tattoos (in general). Instead, I try to maintain a mental timeline. Things like “where I was in school” or… no, the school one worked well for many years (study and work confounded). But now, I’m left with “which movie came out that year”.
Tougher than you think. We can’t depend on the old B&W vs colour bit (unless you are much older than I). And Hollywood has a terrible habit of do-overs. Did we really need five versions (and counting) of Little Women?
I now accept to add little notations to my video library, in a personal attempt to maintain sequence. Forget Star Wars; that’s a different world of pain. But on the whole it works. I’ve accepted that we have to recreate certain Shakesperean masterpieces, over and over again. And I do need to keep Fame versions separate. I’m doing OK.
It does remind me that I’ve seen a fair number of movies, through the years. Don’t get me started on the effect that Netflix and a pandemic is having; I was already trying hard to keep my head above water on the personal collection. A lot of years; a lot of memories. No matter. What would you like to watch?
Because there’s the other thing. Anyone with a sense of search can now find treasures that used to be out of inventory (at the local video store, at least). Hey, are you old enough to remember that source of entertainment?
