No such thing as “luck”, right?
As a rational being, I don’t believe in luck. That stated; I am having such a run of “bad luck” with technology. I’ve mentioned that we have replaced a number of hard drives (and a computer, in one case). Goes with the age of the equipment. Well, today the wifi router simply quit.
Press the power switch (and hold it in place) and the lights would start to flash again. In real life, holding the power switch becomes a distraction to other things. Like any other man of my age, I immediately found a roll of duct tape, but that didn’t work. You see, the power switch has an impressive little spring integrated, to allow it to “snap back”. I know this, after removing the dozen or so tiny screws and then figuring out how the pieces of the plastic case snapped together. Non-destructive analysis.
Sometimes, it’s just easier to go online with Amazon and find a replacement unit. And we have; it isn’t identical, but close enough. Oddly, the price offered to one of the household members was 20% less that that brought up by the other. We chose with wisdom and discernment. The new router isn’t identical, but with my skills of reconfiguring a local network, I am not worried. Over the next week, I’ll live without security. My neighbour doesn’t seem to be a practicing hacker, so that’s good.
Why am I buying something from a company that has a proven failure rate? Easy; I accept that seven years of good can be followed by a moment of bad. Sound suspiciously like “luck”.
