A firm hand on the tiller of the State

posted in politics |

Today’s news brought a famous quote to mind: Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer (from The Art Of War, which I haven’t read, but will cite just the same). Today, the cornerstone of the new American administration was set into place. Hilary Clinton will be the next Secretary of State, serving as the real assistant to President-elect Obama.

I think she is exactly the choice for the job. After all, she has a favourite seat on Air Force One, and she knows where all the good junk is stored at Camp David (that mystical retreat formerly known as Shangri-la). She’s already had supper with most of the real players in the game, so she knows which ones are properly table-trained. She even can pronounce the new president’s name properly (all the while gritting her teeth and smiling).

Should the gang over at CNN make the Freudian slip of mentioning Madame President, who’s to care? In the eyes of the world, the Secretary of State does all the heavy work. Just look back over the last eight years for proof. On second thought, scrub that idea.

For those of us that were around during the Nixon era, we recognize the importance of people like Kissinger in the game of Realpolitik. If she plays things right, she could also win one of those Nobel prizes. Think how that would upstage Bill’s Rhodes scholarship. Because whatever else happens, the woman is ambitious. Talented, shrewd, but above all else ambitious. If she can institute a bit of that world peace magic, the Oval Office is hers for the taking.

Doesn’t the game playing out in Ottawa seem so Junior Varsity all of a sudden?
