Slower than molasses in mid-winter

posted in technology |

Oh the torture! Slow internet service; it feels like I’m back in the days of dialup, without that reassuring snarl of the modem connecting. Thanks to “the only game in town”, I’ve been living at the end of a DSL connection for better than four years. Or worse. Everything is relative, but there are speed tests out there, and I do run them and record the results, periodically. Right now, we’re going through some mud on the information highway, and my average speed may be within the terms of service, but the data flow is not satisfactory.

I’ve been checking out the competition; their terms of service don’t reassure me, because they cover all the bases with that famous modifier: “up to”. If I were to change to a new ISP, there would be the added stress of negotiating new terms for my wired telephone and the satellite channels that leave me bewildered. Do I really want to rock my own boat, in the faint hope that things will improve? It may be a long winter.

We all know it. Good net is the bloodstream of society. What with the need for news and social media and entertainment, not to mention business requirements, it’s time for the big guys to stop with their laissez-faire attitude. Would any one of them accept slow web in the office? Not likely. And how about if their mother was at the end of one of those mediocre connections? Not likely. I trust in the government to stop paying for infrastructure that never makes it that “last mile” the tech sites mention. Or kilometer, if you prefer. Just light up the fibre on the poles locally, and let the magic begin.
