Here in my virtual candy store

posted in economy |

Three weeks ago, after responding to an ad on social media, I cast caution aside and order what was clearly a gadget. Something that didn’t cost much, so I was willing to accept less than value for my money (hey, it’s Canadian; we do that all the time). In this case, an assist for my lack of visual acuity, up close.

And today, in the mail, a blob. The labels told me that the package had been sent from China, and that it was “to be scanned by Ukraine Post”, which served to confuse me even more. What had I ordered?? Turns out, I now own a headset with interchangeable lenses, and the whole this is well made (OK, plastic, but…) and functional. I will not post a selfie; for such things you can invest in your own gadget. But, I didn’t get snookered, and when something arrives all the way from China, unbroken, in three weeks? Perhaps I should rejoice.

For the record, here’s what I now own. You can compare my picture to the one posted earlier, on 17-Sep-2019.

Living far from retail, my online search and purchase habit requires patience. Yes, there’s a certain pleasure in buying, but by the time parcels arrive, the endorphins have usually reset. Please forgive me if I get excited about stuff that wouldn’t merit a second glance in a bricks and mortar retail world. It has been less than five years, here in the countryside, and I still haven’t mellowed out. Kid in a virtual candy store? Me, for sure.
