The leader is no longer with us
There. The man who would have probably made a decent federal leader has been voted “off the island”. The boat won’t sail right away, but Mr. Dion has a personal gangplank. It must be noted that political parties may be among the most undemocratic of groups.
The knives have never really been sheathed, but after last week’s top of the polls were released it was only a matter of available press conference times. The big summit (with absolutely no press time) served as a distraction through the weekend, but today is Monday and it’s a fine day to announce your intentions to find another career. One week ago, he would have gladly been the face on the federal website; today, he is ready to turn his back on the job that never was.
Note that there was nothing scientific, or political, about the decision. This was the backroom calling. Let’s not pretend that there is anything civilized about politics. Just like in pro sports, where a losing team must lose its coach, Mr. Dion was no longer fit to lead. So long and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Meanwhile, the leadership field is already filling with others who can’t spell humble when they play scrabble.
The next few months will serve to distract us. Maybe the parliament will actually accomplish something, given that one of the main parties is otherwise occupied, but somehow that’s too much to hope for. So, how many weeks until the next season of American Idol?
