Not always up to date
I yearn for the time BU. Before Updates; I’ll save you the need to google it. It seems that every time I complacently assume that my various gadgets are ahead of the curve, another software/firmware/fix is announced. And then, I have to go and find the required patch cable and do a quick study on the “how to”. Yes, I could fade into a world where my stuff was technically broken, but my respect for software engineers won’t allow me that release.
I’m not the only one. Recently, someone took the time to study the various pumps used for IV feeds in a local hospital. First hand study: she was “attached” and had the time to look at the only reading material on hand (the control panel located on the pump). Not just one; she discovered that, yes, there was a rotation of equipment, along with a failure to fix things. So, multiple pumps. I’ll let you ponder the possibilities.
And how many among us actually check the service bulletins at the garage, looking for recalls. None of us, because we aren’t supposed to know that our cars might be hiding manufacturing flaws. All around us, a world moving slowly out of date. I’ve stopped panic moments triggered by “best before” dates on the food I eat.
Getting back to software updates. Two of my synths are due for version changes. However, one of them doesn’t actually do anything, so now I have to decide if having the current version number is important. For those with mild OCD, this is an important decision. Much worse than a wrinkled blanket on the family couch.
