Data at a snail’s pace

posted in environment |

I had forgotten just how slow the Internet could be, until my speed dropped by a full 500% today. Brought back to the reality of a world where nothing will load because of timeouts, I was ready to go find a good book and curl up in the corner. Too warm for such things. Although the heat wave hasn’t gone off scale yet, I did spot inside temperatures of 32C.

And of course, with the web slowed to a crawl, other daily activities suffered. I needed the whole afternoon to complete my daily grammar exercises in Duolingo: no connection, no updates. Around suppertime, after resetting the DSL modem several times, I managed to get the final chime, signaling the end to my study period for the day. Unlike a student in the school system, I actually wanted the feed.

My efforts to soak the hose nozzle (in vinegar) seems to have brought some improvement. The “spray” and “mist” settings are giving better coverage. Should encourage the garden to get busy and produce a small amount of nourishment for a local family.

I’m working my way through the leftovers in the fridge. My plan is to hold off with any new efforts in the kitchen until after I’ve cleared out the remains of the meals from days past. I’m so in tune with my available diet.

That cave rescue I mentioned yesterday? Premature. The search parties have found the soccer team, but it may take up to three more months before the effort is completed. For these lads, this will be the “summer of darkness”; I imagine not one among them will ever enter another grotto.
