Fireworks in the fog?
Following our visit to the local funeral home, to pay last respects to a relative, and renew links with distant cousins, we had to get back into the “regular groove”. Going for groceries is only a small part of the whole social fabric.
We decided to detour by the lighthouse. I don’t go there often (they took the real lamp away and left a flashlight in place), but I did want to see the new office building. Locally constructed, built to the norms of life in a windy place, this ups the comfort zone for the employees. It was also a chance to purchase a book for the kids…
And now I’m watching the fog roll up from below. Quiet time. Might have to construct a foghorn, if I decide to take my role as a weather warden seriously. Waiting for the kids and dogs to return from the beach, because supper. We had put “going to watch the fireworks” on the list of ways to stretch out the evening, but that fog could limit the show. Do they cancel when it isn’t raining or blowing a gale? Wouldn’t explosions in the air seem cooler with enough opacity? I’d go just to learn how organizers handle such things. Didn’t we go to two shows, last year? Or was that two different distracted moments in time?
So this is what a long weekend feels like. Seems very ordinary, in large part because I don’t have to be in an office for the rest of the week. How did I ever handle the effort?
