Summer talent
Tonight, live on our stage! Actually, so many people. We had tickets to a local concert, picked up a couple of weeks back and held by a strong magnet to the fridge door (one way to lessen house loss). This evening, in spite of some wet and windy weather, we headed out to the community of Goose River.
I think I might have been in that hall, once before. Little matter. A small venue, but proudly joined to the other small venues that make up the “Festival of Small Halls” locally. I’ve managed to attend (on average), one concert per summer. This might be it, as the calendar is filling quickly. We were there before the doors opened, and were inside with seats “side by each” midhall, before the real backfill began. Right beside us, some of the summer neighbours that come up for the fine weather (not). They actually have a small house that keeps them busy all through the snow-free season.
On stage, rather diverse talent. The evening opened with a storyteller, Dale MacIsaac. I know of him by family tree ties, and I think I’ve met some of his siblings along the way. Some fun tales from his childhood. He came out several times, actually.
Next up, a folksinger from Newfoundland. Matthew Byrne. I quite enjoyed his style, and made a beeline for the merch table at break time. I forget that there’s a lot of undiscovered talent out there (while they pass by unaware of my ignorance).
Finally, the headliners. Chrissy Crowley and Jason Roach (two quarters of Còig, for those in the know). Fine driving style fiddling and piano. As an end of show enhancement, they invited Cassie MacDonald (from Cassie and Maggie) up to do the final set. Great show.
