Building a replica

posted in technology |

As a parent, you do what you can to keep the next generation happy. Even if it involves shopping for odd utility clothing on websites, or taking a trip to the hardware store in the middle of a summer evening, to buy odd pieces of PVC to go with the utility gear. I’m ahead of myself.

In just under two months, those who wish can get “dressed up” for the day. Son #3 is starting early. This year, the costume of choice involves dressing as if he had to do battle in some video game that frequently has screentime around here. The character has some technologically advanced nightvision goggles, and my role is to aid in the fabrication of something that can pass inspection in a costume parade. There is a suggested parts list on one web site, and we’re in for a few weeks of careful cutting, cementing and electrifying the headset.

First on the list are some PVC fitting, in a size that is NOT used locally by the weekend plumber. We found some sort of a drain replacement system that will be cut down to size. Ditto for the round safety goggles; I’ll Dremel my way to greatness on those, unless the lenses crack or splinter. Next up, some electrical tape that is found at the diametrical opposite corner of the store. Amazing how some of the “old guys” know where everything in the store can be found!

Soon I’ll have to find a source of cheap green LEDs, with the necessary power source. That should prove to the kid that I’m an integral part of his latest project.
