A pile of Pi(s)

posted in computing |

When you find multiple identification guides available, take it as a sign that you are not alone. The object before you has confused others. Be it tiny bird hanging around the feeder, or a drawer with a collection of single-board computers, the need to be sure is the same.

After a few minutes of header counting and careful attention to the connectors, I now believe I’ve sorted out my Pi family.

The oldest, and the one most likely to be dedicated to a mundane task, is the R Pi Model B rev. 2 which has served as the basis of my weather cam. It will continue to do so, given its anemic processor. Back in the box, for now.

Installed into the two cases I received earlier this week, I have a matched pair of R Pi 3 Model B; given the addition of Bluetooth and Wifi, plus 4 USB ports, these beat many of the home computers I’ve shared space with over the decades. Both of the boards function, and I have used them in a number of home theatre, Internet radio, sound situations (I have some outboard sound cards for the task). Again, some known capabilities and some jobs to get done. Back with your brother.

Finally, I’ve received a R Pi 3 Model B+ board, which is faster and better (according to the hype on the sites). This one, I’m keeping for some super-duper project, as yet undecided. Might have to work my way through that pile of magazines I’ve collected (in PDF) before proceeding.  The next few weeks are full of promise, if I don’t lapse back into lethargy.

As a note to me; each board has a dedicated OS solution, so no pool of products allowed.
