A find from my childhood

Sixty years ago, the railroad was important. Here, at least. The tracks ran from tip to tip to tip, and trains meandered from vale through vale to vale (we have very few hills here). I was part of all that. And no locomotive seemed more ubiquitous (from my shortsighted perspective) than the GE 70-tonner.

There were (about) a dozen of them, and I was too young to be spotting cab numbers; it’s just that pretty much every consist was pulled by them (usually them, as the pulling capacity was limited). When the railroad “went away”, so did the machinery.

Turns out, there’s one still wearing original livery, with a number from back then. I’d clambered up the stairs during a visit to the railway museum. To me, a static exhibit. Well, there are wonderful things to be seen on the ‘net. #30 is still running, and pulling fortunate passengers around that same museum ground.

Here’s a link; not going to be visible to everyone, but maybe there’ll be a crosspost to YouTube. Until then, dream.

Meanwhile, my evening is going swimmingly. I’m backing up an external hard drive to another external hard drive, which is assuring hours and hours of fun. If the transfer is successful, I’ll mail one of the drives off to son #2. For me, offsite storage. For him, an access to hours and hours of visual content. He can become a “stick around the house” just like me. Sorry, significant other. It’s in our genes.

And for now, the snow is all gone. Maybe we’ll have an “easy winter”.
