Bags come in any colour, as long as it is black

posted in computing |

Dull, dull, dull. The baggage industry has very little imagination, when it comes to the design of bags for lugging your portable computer from place to place. I mean, you could place your machine in anything; an old potato bag, if you have one handy, and you shake out the spud-dust first. Or that new fancy bag that doubles as a tote for the yogurt and breadsticks from the local supermarket would suffice, in a pinch. But when it comes down to the suitcase for your expensive new laptop, the industry has the imagination of a sloth.

Basic black, nylon, with several zippers, a place for your business card and a strap that guarantees a sore shoulder. That’s what is out there. I guess that a knapsack designed for trekking up the side of a small mountain would also do the job, but when you arrive in the local computer store, black is the colour of the day.

I decided to shop elsewhere, in a huge handbag and suitcase emporium, but when the size of the laptop was made clear, my choice narrowed drastically. There was the bag in black nylon, or the expensive bag in some variation on black leather, or the other style of bag with a flap, in black nylon. No sense wasting my time or theirs; they know my needs and they will meet them in the manner they have decided is proper. I now own, you guessed it, a black nylon bag with zippers.

Maybe, sometime, I’ll spot another bag that is as innovative as the one I owned, briefly, this summer. In the meantime, if I look like the average guy from the cubicle down the hall, blame it on the baggage people.
