Almost a surprise
In a more ordered world, this would have been a surprise. You know how people are always saying “You should drop in sometime!”? Today, with nothing but the best of intentions, we headed for the city to visit relatives. Getting to the area is almost an autopilot thing, for us. It’s when you arrive…
At the first stop, no car in the driveway. That’s a good sign that the occupants are elsewhere; we live in a mobile society. No matter, there’s other times. Stop #2 required a bit more effort. One of these locked entrance apartment blocks, with no directory and a mysterious keypad mounted near the door. I had a memory flash and keyed in the correct code (first try!!) to get us past the gate. The elevator was just around the corner. And then the plan collapsed. The apartments also have little in the way of identifiers, other than a number. This part, I didn’t recall.
We roamed the floors, but there is nothing more anonymous than a strange apartment building. Even the music heard through doorways gave little help. Finally, we texted for “directory assistance”. The party in question is presently two days drive away… out of town in a very convincing manner. We sent a selfie in front of the door (after getting that clarified) and went on our merry way.
To a book store. Again, too much to see. I finally retired to the car where the dog kept me company while I listened to folks reminisce about Day #1 for the Fixed Link. It’s an Island thing.
