Life without a landline?
I undTerstand why change (in technology) is slow. The phrase of the day is that “it comes at a cost”.That’s where we find ourselves, while contemplating a shift to better internet. After asking locals that have gone for the gold standard, they pointed out that we might have to give up our landline, to avoid cost overruns. I know; some of you have forgotten what it is like to be pld. I have a tppephone that provides me with security. Not in the sense of “alarm systems”. Nore like a way to contact help. It doesn’t matter that I have never called the fire service, or an ambulance. It’s in case of need.
As in, what if I stubbed my toe, badly. Brolen foot badly. While frying bacon. And I had a sudden flash fire in the kitchen. Would I limp to the corner, shouting for assistance. Or would I conveniently dial the dispatch, and shout for assistance? I really don’t know. No previous experience. But if we dropped the landline. For reference, it apparently cost as much as a we spend on a week’s groceries each billing period. And my conversations with Amazon security are my way of getting affirmation that I do speak the local language.
We could wait for fiber optic service. After almost a decade, it can’t be much longer. We might need to keep our landline service, no matter what. Obviously, the contemplation period continues. Right now, if I stub my toe, help is less than an hour away. Decisions. At least I have the ‘net. Slow, but usually there. Life is good. In passing, today was without scam calls, which complicate the decision algorithm.
