Local reps should be locally chosen

It stormed, overnight. Nothing noisy, but we went from no snow on the ground to a recorded 34cm. Decent amount. And I did what I had to do: I dressed appropriately, took my shovel to the scene of the battle, removed the remains. A big drift, mainly. No sudden onset of infarctus, so I guess I have passed my “stress test”. No, don’t call the doctor.

All I can do is look outside

I really should cease with my weather advice to others. In particular, to someone with ties to heavy transport. You see, if I get asked about the chances of a storm, in a place that is four days away by bicycle (I don’t own a car), I’m guessing blindly. From my kitchen window, I see none of this. Yes, I’m in the region (sic). No, I am unqualified to give a third hand interpretation of the probs to anyone (including the dog).

A bip. Not a beep.

Part way through the night, the wind picked up and the rain showers started. Along with that, the two dogs did a “change positions” in the foot-of-the-bed ballet, and a low rumble from the passing ferry boat assured that I was no longer asleep. Time for one more noise. A bip. Not a beep, but something more pernicious.

(What do you do with) a seventh ring?

Some days, just laying in bed, with a couple of dogs, sounds like a plan… that could have been. Except, we had already made an appointment with our local electrician, and he was on the door step before coffee time. Now, I’m glad we have access to tradespeople that can come the day after being called. And that show up. And that can take a half-baked verbal plan and turn it into what we want. Worth it, and more. Our basement has moved that much closer to being complete.

Orange Elvis and Old Blue-eyes

The snow is back. See? We live in fast changing times.

I’m also doing my neighbourly duty by welcoming that other dog into the house for a couple of days. I have nicknamed him “Frank Sinatra”, due to a wonderful singing voice and blue eyes. You can’t make this stuff up.

A pause for sandy paws

Looking at a storm, after the fact, is not wasted. We learn for the next time, etc. In the case of yesterday’s storm, we came out with less snow on the ground, and some decent temperatures. Today, the best time of day was mid-afternoon, when we reached a balmy +7. Destroyed any possibility of skiing. Or snowshoeing. In fact, as we pass the date of “imbolc”, I feel blessed. Another year without parka requirements? Maybe.

Attentive to the location

The things we remember… on social media, a group were recalling their days of glory, at a local skating arena. I was there, before the ice. That is, I spent two weeks, almost five decades ago, fastening the layers of mesh, piping and insulation that have to be there before the big pour (concrete). When you are young, an indoor summer job is worth your time, even if it means calluses. I’m happy that other people have enjoyed my efforts (sic). Maybe, someday, I’ll lace up the blades and go for a victory lap. Or probably not. A half century will be the point where the city builds something better, and this place will be a footnote in recreational history.

What did you do, during?

Although I haven’t watched it, yet, I’m attracted by a movie title from a half century ago: “What Did You Do In The War, Daddy?” The reviews have convinced me that there’s something to be learned here, for that eventual question: “What did you do in the pandemic?”
