Right now, I feel like there are a whole set of courses that I should have taken in school, and didn’t. My core knowledge is lacking. And here’s the thing; until very recently, it wasn’t. I had managed to get through the usual hurdles in life. School, family, child rearing, clearing stuff from the dog’s gullet. Got a decent mark on all of those courses. But this?

The quarantine ritual seems pretty simple, on the surface. Get in some snacks, figure out how to fit Netflix into your sleep schedule, leave the heavy hauling to others. Except, there are some exceptions, when there are new rules.

Practicing “self isolation”, which is the new norm, isn’t any big deal. I feel like I’ve been doing this for years. Checked with someone nearby, and I have that affirmed. I really do spend a lot of time inside with the dog, while life goes on. I’m good for the stretch ahead.

It’s a learning process, apparently: this afternoon, the provincial government gave notice that the retail recreational drug business would be shuttered… tomorrow afternoon. Right now, and I assume through tomorrow morning, all those who want to get their “provisions” in place are out shopping. Huddled masses, etc. Of course, the other notice from the government is that we should practice social distancing. Guess which notice has been prioritized? We have been told that there will be new rules in place, tomorrow. I assume this will cover the final hour of business, as the original notice had a time, place and conclusion. Why bother trying to figure this out?

Due to the progress in our ongoing medical horror tale, some things are happening by anticipation. For example, our local university campus, including the library, will be closed until further notice. Our income tax returns will be filed at least one month later (official notice anticipated for a press conference tomorrow). My sibling has decided to seek the comfort of home, given that life among the Spring Break generation lacks the atmosphere of the different movies over the years. We have groceries, due to our own anticipation of hunger pangs, and the reassurance given by the food store employees wearing surgical gloves. Amazon has announced that their deliveries will be prioritized, which should limit my purchases of unnecessary articles. And on and on.

This afternoon, the two lads from up the road came by. With their dog and their sleds. A little later, their mother posted a short video on social media, showing the lads flying (sic) away from my deck and across the field. About a half-kilometer run, I calculate. Until now, I didn’t realize that I lived at the top of a hill. I am the “king of my mountain”!

Today, in response to the pandemic, the province of Quebec ordered the closure of bars, gyms and cinemas. For some people in my circle, that’s a very big deal. Think this through: a family friend that works as a DJ, now unemployed. A son that has his life tied up in a microbrewery with restaurant and bar, now wondering what can happen that is worse for his bottom line. I can’t speak to gyms, but I’m sure that for some that daily dose of endorphins will be missed.

Today, against all odds, the province joined the ranks of the virals. We have an intrepid traveler that returned from a sea cruise with that little bit extra (COVID-19) and is now facing two weeks of time alone. I’m surprised it took this long, given that the world has been talking about (nothing but) this for several weeks now.

The people at National Geographic saved me from a lot of personal effort in a recent article. Imagine, if I had been required to purchase a bell, hang that around the neck of a house cat and then take the time to follow the beast. Wouldn’t happen. Instead, over nine hundred cats were equipped with GPS trackers. And then, in a feat of scientific discovery, the cats were allowed to wander while their explorations were recorded.

Did someone decide to do a remake of “The Stand”? Without telling the rest of us? I can hardly keep up.
