A house deserves a history
I wish I had lived in an old house when I was little. A house with a lot of history. I wish I could have lived in the same house long enough to “make” it mine. Instead, I moved often; never far, one house to the next, but each one meant that the previous was just the place where we used to live.
The thing is, I’ve taken the time to learn as much as I can about each of the houses where I did live. Pity, most of them are gone, but I know where they were, and I’ve used the tools available to make sure each place has focus. Maps, aerial photos, the neighbours, the architecture; I have covered my bases.
Someone else has a similar appreciation for historic resources and I applaud his effort. Rob Paterson is preparing to sell his home, and his recent blog posts are “feathering the nest” for the next tenants. You see, a good house lasts beyond any individual. There should be a changing of the guard, in order for a house to earn its place.
He’s done his homework, and the effort can serve as a model for the rest of us who believe in passing along the story that is wrapped in history.
I’m not going to publish my own Island history lesson any time soon; that’s the goal of an eventual wiki. Let’s just say that my siblings have told me they like knowing more about where they were when we were “littler”. My pleasure.
