What did you do, during?
Although I haven’t watched it, yet, I’m attracted by a movie title from a half century ago: “What Did You Do In The War, Daddy?” The reviews have convinced me that there’s something to be learned here, for that eventual question: “What did you do in the pandemic?”
Actually, an old friend did ask me something close, this afternoon, as we held our annual Groundhog Day chat session. How was I dealing with life in ’21? Frankly, pretty well. I recognize my physical boundaries, and I stay within them. The quick answer is that I did what I had to; I stayed home. A year at a time? No big deal! Think of all the fuel I’ve saved by not traveling, at all. And the housework gets done, because otherwise the day would get really long.
In sharp contrast to my own life, I tend to read the online postings of folks that still voyage. Someone wondered what to do, after they had been parked at Walmart for several days and found their water supply to be “short”. The responses from the peanut gallery were unequivocal… move on! Hit the road! Obviously, somebody takes this whole “on the road again” thing very seriously.
I’ve never camped in one spot (not a Walmart) for more than a few weeks. I do accept that you aren’t a nomad if your tent pegs stay in the soil too long. And let’s face it, the usual box store parking lot doesn’t invite you to make it a home. Something about tarmac and towering light poles.
