Tents, music and Linux in the same day

More and more often, I find myself booting up in Linux instead of Windows, and each time I come away a little more impressed with the efforts of the Mint team. After years of riding on the bicycle known as Slackware (biking is fun, but not always stable), I’ve found that the four-wheel comfort of the Mint distro works. This afternoon, I watched a bit from the DVD version of American Graffiti that I’d purchased from an eBay supplier. None of the problems with Linux not playing a movie I’d heard about. I just put in the disk and it worked. Like other things I’ve done recently. Wireless and printing and webcams and multiple language profiles. No kernel recompile, but some things aren’t necessary.

Snow; to be removed

You’re out for a great meal at your local hamburger joint, and the cook offers up the plate with the aside that the meat is not quite cooked, due to a need to save on fuel costs. You’ve been shopping for an umbrella, and the clerk brings to your attention that one of the panels is not covered, because of the need to save on materials. You’ve just purchased a “bus book” but the publisher has included an insert that says three chapters are missing, to save on printing and paper costs.

Low stress schedules

On a day like today, I really can appreciate how a low stress schedule can be very appealing. Since the weekend is here and there was no pressing reason to “go out and about” I simply haven’t done so. Ditto on the heavy kitchen duties. Just a day spent listening to some music, watching a documentary about amphibious vehicles, adding some images to the wiki and using low energy amounts. After all, the next week will begin in a matter of hours. Elsewhere in the city the Carnaval parade will take place in exceptionally warm conditions without me standing there. We all have to make choices. Elsewhere in the world, embassies are burning to retaliate against the printing of cartoons in newspapers. Elsewhere in the universe something must be happening, except that I won’t know about it since the first images won’t arrive for years (talk about a long commute).

The Server’s Back Up

The replacement print server from Motorola has been installed, so printing will require less calisthenics than we’ve put up with here for the last few weeks. As I sit here with the remaining crumbs in my potato chip bowl, I’m not sure that’s a good thing.
