Be my friend for at least a year

Tonight I’ve set aside my spy novels and adventure potboilers, because the news channel offers far superior material to anything available at the local bookstand. The current government seems to have a certain amateur air about many things including the “dating game”, if revelations from this evening are credible.

Management styles

When the alarm goes each morning, I awake with a sense of joy that I am alive and a feeling of relief that our New Government isn’t responsible for managing the country. What! They are, you say? Oh my… isn’t that special?

Taking the long way around

So you’ve got a tank of gas and a beautiful sunny day. What to do? Play tourist for a change, I say. We had our campstove coffee and then off to explore the Island (or a portion thereof).

Holiday concerts

The Canadian way to celebrate a national holiday is to put on a concert. We don’t have a deep love for flags, or military parades, or fireworks. Instead, we put up a stage in a public place and fill it with anybody who will work “for food”. Unwilling to fight the hordes in the old city, I joined my fellow citizens in front of the TV and settled back for a day of music.

More inconvenient truth

No wonder people have a hard time with the “political class”; if you give them a chance the polit will do the stupid pet trick routine every time. Watch our latest minister of the environment. Here is a man that will save the world with some lightbulbs. In keeping with the pet tricks, my youngest refers to the man as the hampster from Ottawa. My own feeling is that with one of those wheels that are synonomous with the species, we could light a dim bulb.

Imperfection by definition

It’s been almost a week since the gang in Ottawa rang the budget bell, and the thing is still ringing. I spent a couple of hours this afternoon tuned in to Cross Country Checkup, where almost everyone was somewhat dissatisfied, each for a different reason. I guess that’s one result of governing by obfuscation.

With a few pennies more

The current provincial campaign has been a budget bluster from start to finish (please, let it finish!). Each group out-promising to outspend the other. Each group just a little bit better able to put the finger on the pulse of our needs. Not nearly enough cash to do the job properly, but if there were just a few pennies more, miracles would happen.

The race is over; let the race begin

Somehow, the parallel between a very recent leadership campaign and a marathon is startling. Too many runners on a bridge to nowhere. Lots of coverage at every corner, waiting for someone to trip or spill the refreshment table. All the runners filled with a desire to win and a protestation that they are there for the others, as team members.

Tired and it’s only halftime

This is a huge football weekend in Canada. Due to some kind of calendar jerrymandering, the university semifinals took place today, and Grey Cup will go to a new home sometime tomorrow evening.

Insults and derailments

At some point, the current government in Ottawa must return to the people, and I hope the people will be awake that day. This has been a hard week.
