The Canadian effort began, in a muddled fashion, just over seven years back when three warships set sail for Afghanistan. No matter that the country is landlocked, because in the beginning the whole thing was to be a show of solidarity. When you break a mirror, the bad luck is supposed to end after the ordained period. Our involvement in a so-called foreign war should do the same.

There’s a standing order that one shall not criticize the soldier who is in harm’s way. Let’s put a screen over in that corner of the room, and while the contingent of the enlisted are away, let’s turn and look at those responsible; those who wish they had a screen, but don’t; the politicians.

In spite of my birth in the city, in spite of my education at the university, I didn’t get called to supper. There, now you know that I’m feeling snubbed. No apology is necessary; I couldn’t accept one after the fact. You see, they served pork and apple pies. For a menu like that, I would have tolerated the uppity guest list.

Some jobs make me stop and think: There but for the grace of God go I. I mean, there’s the exceptional ones, like an infantry soldier in Afghanistan, or the person hanging from a winch on a SAR helicopter. Not for the faint of heart, those ones. But closer to home, there are the people who assure that our essential services keep on keepin’ on. The people who take care of the exceptional situations. In particular, the personnel who repair “the lines” for Bell and Hydro.

The evening news brought fascinating images. Our current prime minister is on an officially secretive visit to Afghanistan (secret for reasons of security). There, he spoke of the importance of our mission there, while admiring the inukshuk and grabbing a photo opportunity at the controls of a Hercules aircraft.
