Decide on a high point

I’ve started the process. After contacting my fuel dealer and going through the mandatory credit verification, they agreed that my money was good. Not good enough to speed things along; the actual installation of a propane cylinder is about five weeks away, but that gave me enough “success” to move ahead with an order of a brand new standby generator.

Is this akin to buying a used car?

Don’t count summer as over just yet. Moving from that single digit evening earlier in the month, we managed to get up close to 30C this afternoon. Pretty much required beach time for others. We had other company to welcome.

Wheel that barrow

I assumed that certain things were available at the local hardware store. In generic form. Today, I learned that one of the simple implements of home estate care, the wheelbarrow, comes in a confusing array of styles and sizes. And, in keeping with proper box store staffing, the whole thing is a mystery to those who sell them.

A day of domestic bliss

Sleepy Saturday. The pancake breakfast didn’t last through a final edit of the family social calendar. Instead, the dog and I waved goodbye to a city-bound car, and settled in to a fun-filled day of domestic bliss.

Late night strolling

The dog hinted strongly that we needed to go for a moonlight stroll, earlier. After checking the windspeed (mosquito protocol) and finding a flashlight, we headed up the road to allow certain necessary movements. Funny how the dog seems less dependent on an artificial light than me. Or maybe he just doesn’t care about the scenery.

Sufficient silver to feed the meter

While preparing my grocery list, I had the plan to go and get “a few things” before heading back home to laze around in the next-to-final day of this heat wave. Instead, the trip turned into something bigger. Started with a real, honest, sit-down breakfast in the local café. I’m easily impressed by a place that can serve eggs, bacon, fried potatoes and coffee, while maintaining the flavours exclusive to each element.

Cutting the proverbial line

Almost exactly three years ago, I decided to adapt. People wondered why the tech guy was, pretty much, the only one in the place without a cellphone. Peer pressure. After a short consultation with a specialist at the local box store, I signed on the proverbial dotted line, and added a smartphone to my toolkit.

Brighter (flash)lights

I don’t really need a brighter flashlight. I have several; all capable of showing me a path through the house should the power go out. Which it did, in passing. A short outage, before noon. Long enough to remind us that without current, the house is quiet and bereft of comforts like running water. Have to keep that thought in mind, should the desire to own a generator start to fade.

Safe backup models

Forget about imminent drought. It’s been raining, all day. I can see traces in the sloping sections of the lawn-to-be, which means that we’re going to have to reseed certain areas. No big deal; the contractor warned about such things. Even the dog played wise and refused to take me outside until there was a short window of opportunity. He is so polite!
